The Queen Mary 2 (QM2) was a very unique job. The QM2 is the largest cruise ship in the world and the largest ship to visit Port Everglades. All the Port Security Barrier (PSB) systems require a mooring system to anchor them to the ocean floor. Port Everglades required we deploy the barrier system after the QM2 arrived. This type of deployment had never been done before. Normally, the barrier system is set up on location and then assembled in sections as they are moored. For the QM2, HOI pre-staged the entire 1500-foot length of PSB’s in a remote location, which was about 1nm down the Intra Coastal Waterway (ICW). Once the QM2 was secured, the HOI team maneuvered the entire string up the ICW and into position around the QM2. The mooring system and latch systems were all deployed in stages during this maneuver. The transit of the string and the deployment of the anchors from start to finish took 3 hours.
On the 31st of January the QM2 departed from Port Everglades. HOI had opened and closed the gate for the QM2 (9) times during its stay in Port Everglades.
